US Model 1805 Flintlock Pistol

Made in 1807. Serial number 1643. Experts estimate that fewer than 275 of the total production remain in collections today. These pistols were produced in pairs, with both pistols having identical serial numbers. No serial number higher than 2048 has ever been discovered, with a total of 4,096 produced between 1806 and 1808. The model 1805 “Harper’s Ferry” flintlock pistol, manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia (now West Virginia), was the first pistol manufactured by an American national armory. This gun is the standard pattern with round steel barrel, breech marked with raised eagle over “P” in a sunken oval behind a raised “US” in a sunken oval behind stamped serial number “1643”. Lock is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1807” in vertical arcs behind cock. Under the pan is a spread-winged eagle facing toward the cock over “US”. The plain walnut stock is marked opposite the lock with inspector initials “V” over “JS” in script, for James Stubblefield. This gun is known and has been recorded on lists of 1805 pistols, recorded as having been previously sold by Flayderman. CONDITION: Good, overall. The barrel retains a freckled brown patina. Lock has been expertly reconverted to flintlock configuration. Markings are excellent. Stock good with some scattered marks from use, age cracks, and a small piece replaced on the front of the pommel, very good cartouche. A “W” was inscribed next to the cartouche by an owner in the period. Ramrod is a contemporary replacement. Brass retains a mellow patina. Overall a nice representative piece.
