The 638 occupies a sweet spot in the J-frame family. Unlike the popular 642, the 638 features a shrouded but exposed hammer, giving you the ability to shoot either single-action or double-action while still maintaining the snag-free draw characteristics these revolvers are famous for.

The shrouded hammer design prevents the gun from hanging up on clothing during the draw, yet leaves enough hammer exposed for those who appreciate the option of a lighter, more precise single-action trigger pull. Many J-frame enthusiasts consider the 638 the best of both worlds: the carry characteristics of a hammerless revolver with the versatility of a traditional exposed-hammer wheelgun.
