1881 Antique Winchester Model 1876 .45-60 — J.P. Lower Denver Marked

For sale is an antique Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle, serial number 17547, manufactured in 1881 and chambered in .45-60 WCF.

The rifle has a 28-inch round barrel, full-length magazine tube, lever action, and sliding dust cover. The barrel bears a J.P. Lower, Denver, Colorado retailer marking. J.P. Lower was a prominent western firearms and sporting-goods dealer operating in Denver during the late 1800s. The marking adds historical interest, although no claim is being made that the rifle was originally shipped directly to J.P. Lower without supporting factory documentation.

The metal has an aged gray and brown patina with finish loss, oxidation, handling marks, and wear consistent with an antique firearm of this age. The wood shows normal wear, and the forearm has old geometric carving. The age and origin of the carving are unknown.

The lever operates, and the hammer holds securely at both half-cock and full-cock. I do not have the appropriate ammunition, so feeding, extraction, and ejection have not been tested. The rifle has not been test-fired, and the bore has not been properly inspected or graded.

The full-length magazine tube is present but is currently loose or not retained near the muzzle. It should be considered inoperative until inspected and repaired by someone familiar with antique Winchester rifles.

The rifle is being sold in its present condition as an antique collector firearm. No claim is being made that every component, finish, sight, or stock feature is factory original. A Cody Firearms Museum factory letter is not currently included.
