The Ranging Measuring Systems 600 (also called the Ranging 600 Optical Tape Measure or simply Ranging 600 Rangefinder) is a vintage optical rangefinder produced by Ranging Inc. (or Ranging Measuring Systems), a company based in Rochester/East Rochester, New York.
It is a non-electronic, non-laser device that uses optical principles (coincidence or split-image rangefinding) to measure distances without physical contact or a tape. These were popular in the 1970s–1980s for applications like archery, hunting, golf, surveying, or general outdoor distance estimation before affordable laser rangefinders became common.
Key Features and Specs (Typical for the Model)
- Range: Approximately 50 to 600 feet (roughly 15–183 meters), depending on conditions and target visibility. Some references note effective use up to several hundred feet for larger objects.
- Design: Compact handheld unit (roughly 8″ x 4″ x 1.5″). It includes a viewfinder where you align a split or doubled image of the target to read the distance on a scale.
- Operation: Purely mechanical/optical—no batteries, no laser. You look through the eyepiece, focus or align the image on the target (e.g., a tree, flag, or building), and read the distance directly from the internal scale. Accuracy depends on user technique, lighting, and target size/contrast but was considered reliable for its era in the 50–600 ft range.
