Antique U.S. Navy Contract Winchester-Lee Model 1895 Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle

Part of the first U.S. Navy contract of 10,000 rifles, with completed deliveries between late 1896 through mid 1897. Designed by James Paris Lee, the innovative Winchester-Lee rifles are chambered for the rimless high velocity 6mm Lee Navy (.236 U.S.N.) cartridge and feature a straight pull-bolt action with charger-loaded five-shot internal magazine. These rifles saw extensive service with the Navy landing parties during the Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion and Philippine Insurrection. “-U.S.N.-/(anchor)/No 2786/-N.C.T.-” roll-stamped on the top of the receiver.

Condition
Very good, with refinished bolt and barrel bands, scattered light freckling and some patches of light pitting. Later replacement Krag-Jorgenson type rear sight held in with one screw. Stock is good as sanded and re-oiled, with scattered dents and scratches, and some cracks in the handguard. Broken/half absent safety lever, absent extractor, otherwise mechanically functions.
